Advance Drawing Class Syllabus

Why Drawing? Drawing is the essential and very basic part of art production. Drawing develops hand and eye coordination which makes your drawings more accurate. Drawing trains us to really ‘see’ rather than simply ‘look’ and become better observers of the world around us. Drawing can be the end product or it can be the process to further artwork. Drawing helps to transfer ideas from our brains to a physical and visual space we can change and manipulate. Some of the topics we will cover during this school year: 1. Review of Art Elements and Principles 2. Value Scale, Color Wheel and Color Scheme 3. Grid Drawings 4. Still Life 5. Portraits 6. Human Figure 7. Landscape/Architecture Drawing students will develop their observation and accuracy skills as they progress through a variety of classroom assignments such as personal still life’s, perspective drawings, portraiture, figure drawing, and landscapes. A wide range of drawing media will be used as students’ complete assignments. Students will continue to develop compositional understanding by applying the elements and principles of design to their sketches/drawings. A variety of artists will be studied as students discover how they are relevant in art history and to the individual student’s work. Advanced Drawing will further explore techniques, observational skills and personal style development. Media used will vary from pencil to pen and ink, charcoal, pastels and paints. Students will be challenged to create large-scale works and to make individual choices about media used to complete the classroom assignments in a personal style. Portraiture, figure drawing from clothed models, still life, and landscapes are among the many subjects that may be explored. Individual style and creative problem solving skills will be developed.
